On March 20, 2010, the NoVES Board met at the home of Mary Ellen and Andy Stanton. Board members present were president Hank Gassner, vice president Mary Ellen Stanton, treasurer Sven Sinclair, secretary Andy Stanton, Mary Bellamy, Marianne Moerman and Karen Raymond Hart. Leader Jone Johnson Lewis also attended. Prior to the meeting, the Board approved, by email, the minutes of the February 20, 2010, Winter Retreat.
Jone presented her Leader’s report. She has completed the new Platform speaker script, which will emphasize the spirit of community. She is continuing to have birthday meetings with NoVES members.
Sven gave the treasurer’s report. He stated that income is down: $1,000 behind last year (when we had a $7,000 deficit). Platform contributions are about $1,000 below last year. Perhaps one reason is that three platforms were cancelled due to weather. While pledges made are close to the budget, pledges paid are below last year. The Board decided to send a notice to all members indicating their pledge and remaining balance. Weddings are up $1,000 from last year. Income from the auction should improve the total income figure.
Jone led the Learning Component on how we can keep alive the three goals for the remainder of this year that we arrived at in the Winter Retreat - Attract younger members, expand web presence, and increase involvement in social issues and advocacy. Marianne said the Ethical Action committee decided to focus on three main areas – Food and housing security, access to health care, and gay and lesbian rights. Andy said the Publicity committee has found internet publicity to be the most effective. The Publicity committee has started selling NoVES Tshirts. Mary Ellen reported that the one-room schoolhouse concept is working well at Sunday school. Mary, Karen, and Marianne agreed to help on the pledge campaign.
In his president’s report, Hank said the focus group facilitators had a good training program with the Alban Institute. Mary Ellen is coordinating the focus groups. Hank said he, Karen, Ashby Boaz and Susan Teaford have applied and been accepted for the AEU summer school. Hank will work with Andy on preparing the draft budget.
The Board discussed possible programs for the summer. Mary Ellen will send out an email inviting participation.
Hank said Green Hedges has given us approval to have the McGowan workshop on “Parenting Beyond Belief” on the first Saturday in October. The workshop is an important part of our effort to expand our Sunday school and attract younger members. We will need to make a major effort to publicize it.
