College Student, Sunday School GradIn her own words, are some of the ethical action activities of a graduate of our Sunday School and youth program who has gone on to college: I volunteered as a teaching assistant in a 2nd grade classroom for a year. Then, I volunteered and tutored children who are struggling, one-on-one for the next two years. (Last year I tutored a sixth grader and this year I tutored a high school student). I spent the past 2 years volunteering at the Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. I also organized and hosted an Alex's Lemonade stand for the past 2 years in Oberlin, Ohio. We raised over $700 for pediatric cancer research and passed out over 500 fliers. I also prepared a PowerPoint presentation aimed at future medical professionals to help raise awareness for pediatric cancer. I presented it this year to the health careers practicum class at my university, and I have been asked to present it again to the class next year. I have also participated in a variety of social action events including manning tables on campus to get students to sign petitions and post cards to senators, going room to room reminding students to vote, going to Cleveland to have a protest in the form of a "bake sale" in front of the office of one of the senators to try and raise the hundreds of thousands of dollars that were promised to help treat AIDS in Africa the previous year, going door to door in a Cleveland suburb to try to get people to vote for a gay rights amendment to Ohio's State Constitution, etc. I also went to Nicaragua in January 2005 and again in January 2006 and spent a month working with children who were part of project Chacocente, (a sustainable living project created to help families living in the city dump, by moving them out and teaching them the skills they need to thrive in their new agricultural community). |
