"Science, Scientism, and Ethical Culture" -- Joe Maxwell, NoVES member and professor, George Mason Univeristy.

Partly in response to fundamentalist attacks on evolution, some scientists have launched a counterattack, not just against fundamentalism, but against religion in general. Their claim is that science and religion are incompatible, and that science is the only valid source of knowledge (a position often labeled "scientism"). What are the implications of scientism, and of critiques of this view, for Ethical Culture?

Also: Sunday School students, teachers, and other members of the Society will be recognized for their contributions.

"Values Added" - Jone Johnson Lewis, NoVES Leader

If the kind of ethics we advocate at the Ethical Society is not rule-based ethics, what is it?  Jone Johnson Lewis, NoVES Leader, will focus on the values that members and friends bring to the Ethical Society, and how being part of the Ethical Society is also a "values-added" experience as we learn and grow by the influences of others in this community.

This will be the last Sunday platform meeting of the Northern Virginia Ethical Society until September.

"The Heart of Ethics" -- Jone Johnson Lewis, NoVES Leader

Opening platform meeting of the 2007-2008 program year.

NoVES Leader Jone Johnson Lewis starts the new program year with a look at the role of compassion and emotion in ethical thinking.  The Ethical Movement has been described as being about the "head, heart, and hands" -- what do we mean by the "heart" of ethics?

There's always more to other people than we realize. We pass unknown individuals daily we would honor if we only knew more about them. Each family's outcast, shunned by brothers and sisters, may become a person regarded highly by non-relatives.

Ethical Culture recognizes this when it talks about each individual having worth and dignity. Our ethical vision should also provide a ladder so we can, in the words of Felix Adler, "surmount those walls which surround the shrine" in the other. If we don't try, he said, we ourselves are spiritually dead.

An organization uses a stretch goal to inspire stakeholders to seek and achieve a difficult objective. Because the goal is something that has not been reached before it encourages individuals and organizations to transcend the status quo. As the stretch goal is achieved, the organization handles its opportunities and problems more efficiently and effectively.

Rich will discuss how applying stretch goals toward our environmental challenges, allows us to address social, health, security, and economic problems as well as environmental ones.

"Why Peace?" -- Jone Johnson Lewis, NoVES Leader

The United Nations has celebrated September 21 as an International Day of Peace since 1982. It sounds almost trite to be for "peace on earth" -- sort of like a Miss America speech. Why do we want peace? What kind of peace?
