Standing on the bluff overlooking the largest landfill in Latin America evoked to Hugh Taft-Morales an image crafted by Felix Adler, founder of Ethical Culture:

We stand, as it were, on the shore, and see multitudes of our fellow beings struggling in the water, stretching forth their arms, sinking, drowning, and we are powerless to assist them.

This describes spiritual pains that Adler insisted we must overcome in order to be more effective agents of change.  To save a few, we must understand the suffering of many.

Humanists, and others thoughful about their faith, often find it difficult to explain their religious views in a few words. Ask an Ethical Society member or Unitarian to describe their religious views, and you might be in for a long night. But being concise can help clarify what is essential to a subject. Adam McNaughton, a songwriter from Glasgow, Scotland, has distilled Hamlet into a wonderful song lasting three minutes. It doesn't have the richness of the full five acts, but the outline is there. The Golden Rule is the result of a similar demand for concision. Michael Franch will explain his religion in three sentences, while avoiding its reduction to mere aphorisms. Your sentences might not be quite the same, but they would probably be similar. (Disclosure: This platform address will be longer than three sentences.)

Jone Johnson Lewis, NoVES Leader

Relationships are central to an ethical human life, but we're only human and make mistakes.  Ethical relationships are a lifelong learning process, and often we act in those relationships in ways we regret.  Often others act in ways that trigger resentment in us, and get in the way of wanting to stay in relationship.  When is forgiveness appropriate, and how do we get to the point where we can forgive another? How might we act so as to elicit forgiveness?  How do we move beyond mistakes towards ever more ethical relationships?

In her book, OLD AGE IN A NEW AGE (Vanderbilt University Press, 2007), journalist Beth Baker tells the story of a new generation of visionary advocates and practitioners who are transforming both the culture of nursing homes and the way we view aging. She takes readers on a journey into some of the best places in America for elders to live. In these remarkable places, residents have a say in their everyday lives, enjoy an environment that looks and feels like an ordinary home, live with dignity and purpose, and find comfort in close relationships with caregivers.

She will share surprising lessons she learned from this emerging culture change movement -- and what this movement shares with Ethical Culture.
