At some point many of us have experienced anger that smoldered into hatred. Hopefully, we have had help in confronting the causes of these universal emotions and been able to overcome the corrosive effects of hate. At best we have been able to channel this destructive energy into long-term action for good ends. Martin Luther King's movement has modeled this transformative process for us so well.   We now face the challenge of a renewed campaign of hatred, this time against our sisters and brothers in the American Islamic community. James G. White, Leader of the Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture, will explore the roots of distrust and distortion in ourselves and in our society, and take one more step in life's long march to a world of cooperation and peace.

Nationally acclaimed Race Relations Expert and Klan-Destine Relationships author Daryl Davis, as a Black man, has come in closer contact with members of the Ku Klux Klan than most White non-members, and certainly most Blacks, short of being on the wrong end of a rope.  His presentation, by demonstrating how one person alone can change a mass of hate and impact society, provides insight as to how we can overcome our fears and realize our own power to overcome barriers of hatred.  Daryl Davis was the recipient of the Washington Ethical Society Bridge Builder Award and the American Ethical Union Elliott-Black Award.

We recognize and express our appreciation for our Sunday School students, teachers and staff, and also for other volunteers who have served this Society this year.  Our Leader, Jone Johnson Lewis, will present a platform address as well, reflecting on purpose and meaning, service and recreation.  Sometimes we think about our lives in terms of what will outlast our own life.  Do we still matter if what we do may be washed away with the next tide?
