Welcome!![]() Ethics Is Our Religion Notable QuotesThose who founded our Society did not claim to be themselves better than their fellows. But they had the feeling that the moral end is a holy thing. Despite many actual moral failures in living, our worth consists of striving toward that moral end. In the last analysis it is this moral striving that makes life worthwhile. Moral striving is what makes us human. Ethical Societies near the Northern Virginia Ethical Society: |
Personal StoriesOne of the best ways to get to know us is to hear the stories of some of our members. Here are a few of those: Bringing MusicDoris Justis is the Music Director for the NoVES chorus. For several years Doris was music director at the Washington Ethical Society. As a member of both societies, she tries to divide her time between both but lately has been drawn more and more to Virginia. Doris has been singing and playing the guitar since she was in elementary school! She performs as a solo, with Sean McGhee in the duo "Side by Side" which is celebrating 22 years together this year, and currently with jazz guitarist Pete Marinovich. She has produced concerts, showcases and coffeehouse programs for local, regional and national talent. Bringing Children, Finding Adult CommunityMy name is Iris. I have been a member of Ethical Culture for 16 years. I started coming when my children were young to offer them some ethical education that was non-denominational. Now I bring my granddaughter for the same reason. In the meantime, I have found a community of adults who share my values, interests, and commitment to living a decent life. I find emotional support in bad times, and share the joy of good times. I could not imagine my life without NoVES. Wife, Mother, Therapist, Harry Potter Fan ...My name is Amy and I've been a member of NoVES since 1997 when my husband and I started looking for a Sunday School for our then 3-year-old daughter. We now have two kids in the Sunday School program. College Student, Sunday School GradIn her own words, are some of the ethical action activities of a graduate of our Sunday School and youth program who has gone on to college: I volunteered as a teaching assistant in a 2nd grade classroom for a year. Then, I volunteered and tutored children who are struggling, one-on-one for the next two years. (Last year I tutored a sixth grader and this year I tutored a high school student). |
