Those lazy, hazy days of summer are here again. Following the example of Felix Adler, we at NoVES also take the summer off from our regular Sunday morning platform. That does not mean, though, that nothing happens in summer. In fact, summer is the perfect time to recoup, reflect, and refresh.
Those busy Sunday mornings of colloquy, chorus practice, platform, teaching, and meetings are over until September. It is time to slow down and enjoy the quiet of a summer Sunday morning with an extra cup of coffee or with the newspaper. It is time to take a leisurely walk and chat with neighbors and friends. Summer is the ideal time to nourish ourselves with time out from the busyness of the rest of the year.
Summer is also a great time to reflect on purpose, priorities, and life in general. It is a good time to ask, “What DO I want?” While sitting on a porch sipping iced tea, thoughts can turn to changes a person may want to make, such as trying a new NoVES committee or joining the chorus or attending colloquy.
Finally, summer can be a time to refresh yourself by trying something new or doing something out of character. NoVES is offering a wide variety of summer activities such as movie nights, teas, picnics, and colloquies. It is the perfect time to try something new.
There is much to thank Felix Adler for – his ethical principles, his ideas of humankind, his sense of justice – but we also need to thank him for taking the summers off
