This past week, we focused on UNICEF. We started classes talking a bit about what UNICEF is and why we try to help and talked about how the children can help. The classes divided up after that and each teacher centered their lesson around UNICEF within the framework of their curriculum. For the preschool/kindergarten class that meant they read a story, Biblioburro by Winter. It's a wonderful story and ties in so well with why giving to those who have so little is so important.
The elementary class started out creating a card for the members of our household: They discussed how our homes protect us. How each of us helps around the house and how others in our home takes care of us. That was then tied in with UNICEF and how we could help other kids.
The upper elementary/middle school class did something very special this week, the presented to the members during collection time. They each spoke about the organization being sponsored, UNICEF and then helped with the collection (I will have the total for that next week).
Then, it was Trick or Treat for UNICEF time. What a treat for all the children and all the members. I think the members look forward to this day as much as the kids do. I know several members who save their small change all year long just to use for Trick or Treat for UNICEF. You know what I really love? It's a great way for the generations to interact in a positive way.
And do you know how much money was collected by the children during their trick-or-treating alone? $154.17 !!!!! The kids will be ecstatic and that's not even counting the collection for the day!
This upcoming week we are raring to go. Can you believe it's November already? We are going to be making a video of what the kids are Thankful for during this month. I cannot wait to hear what they have to say.
